Bay of Plenty Civil Defence launches new website

Thursday October 15, 2009

Bay of Plenty residents now have a central point for finding out information both before and during a Civil Defence emergency.
The Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group has launched its new website – www.bopcivildefence.govt.nz ¬– which contains information for people about how to be prepared before an emergency occurs, and also has information for people during an emergency, such as radio station frequencies and latest updates.
Greg Wilson, Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Coordinator says the website has information on natural hazards, personal preparedness and keeping the public informed.
“There also potential for the website to be a significant tool prior to and during an emergency event for keeping the media and public informed,” Mr Wilson said.
Both media and members of the public can subscribe to emergency updates and media releases from the website.
“Of course this is just one way for us to communicate with the public, both in emergency and non-emergency times, so people should always have access to other communication means,” Mr Wilson said. “People should also have a transistor radio with batteries, as we realise that depending on the type of emergency we might experience, the internet will not always be your best information channel.”
As well as an emergency status feature, the website also includes information about the region’s Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, their role and the other resources available to the public.
